Francis Parker School puts out a magazine… a pretty nice magazine. I was kind of impressed with some of the spreads. On delivery one day I asked one of the school staff who designs it? She said, “It’s completely student created. But, there is teacher guidance.”
My first thought was, “Geezus, we’re in trouble…”
Truthfully, it’s pretty awesome.

I’ve been buying and reading up on cels lately – mainly anime. It seems exhausting when you think about how many different drawings it takes for just one second of movement. The following math is based on one moving element at 24 fps excluding corrections and background art.
(1 Genga + 1 Douga + 1 Cel) / 1 Frame = 3 Drawings/Frame
(3 Drawings /Frame) x (24 Frame/Sec) = 72 Drawings/Sec
(72 Drawings/Sec) x (60 Sec/Min) = 4320 Drawings/Min

Drawing and painting is generally additive besides working with scratchboard, etc. But, what if it was more subtractive, like sculpting? What if all the colors were immediately available on a canvas, and the amount of pressure you apply to an area determines the color that area becomes? I don’t mean the darkness that happens when you press down harder on a crayon, but an actual cycle through the available gamut.
Parameters:
- ROYGBIV : Colors of the rainbow. Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet.
- An individual layer of paint for each color of the rainbow in a set order:
R (Top Paint Layer)

Y
G (Middle Paint Layer)
B
I
V (Bottom Paint Layer)
